Good morning! I’m sipping from a giant mug of coffee with Cookie curled up on my feet, so we’re off to a good start. Today, I thought I’d share a collection of my favorite recipes that are both vegetarian (as always) and gluten free. These are the kinds of dinners that we make at girls’ night, since two of us follow gluten-free diets and I complicate matters by being a vegetarian.
The more restrictions, the more difficult menu planning can be, but I hope you’ll find plenty of inspiration below! You’ll see rice-based dishes, like risotto and Mexican meals, some creative quinoa dinners, hearty salads, quiche and more.
I had a hard time narrowing down the options to an even twenty, so click here for my complete gluten-free category. You can always access it by hovering over ALL RECIPES in the header menu, then mousing down to DIET > GLUTEN FREE. Enjoy!
1) Thai Green Curry with Spring Vegetables
“This was great!! Super easy and yet it also had depth of flavor. I enjoyed it very much. Served it with quinoa instead of rice!” – Sara
2) Southwestern Kale Power Salad with Sweet Potato, Quinoa & Avocado Sauce
“This was delicious (and so pretty too!). I’ve made a full recipe so that I’d have leftovers for work. Thanks for the suggestions on storing; it travels well!” – Patricia
3) Colorful Beet Salad with Carrot, Quinoa & Spinach
“Made this tonight and it was delicious! I’m normally not a huge fan of beets but the tangy dressing worked really well and masked the usual “earthiness” of the beets (even the beet-hating bf couldn’t resist a couple bites ;p). Topped it with a fried runny egg and it was a great post-workout dinner :)” – Emily L.
4) Thai Pineapple Fried Rice
“That was super delicious and easy. I love the recipe you adapted it from but I may like this one even more. My meat eater husband loved it too. More stir fries like this please! :)” – Kerry
5) Spicy Sweet Potato and Green Rice Burrito Bowls
“I absolutely LOVED this recipe, the green rice was a delicious addition and everything paired together so well. I made this recipe for my friends last night and they had nothing but good things to say, thanks for a new favorite Kate!” – Monica
6) Easy Brown Rice Risotto with Mushrooms and Fresh Oregano
“Made this recipe last night and it was amazing! Not only was the dish delicious and super simple to make, I was even able to do some cleaning during the 40 minutes before it was time to prepare the mushrooms. For those of us who are always looking for ways to multi-task and get things, done, this recipe is great for that!” – Veronica
7) Thai Mango Cabbage Wraps with Crispy Tofu and Peanut Sauce
“Wow, this was seriously delicious! My husband is a die hard carnivore and this dish had him trying to spoon up every last drop, including what we had originally planning on saving for lunch the next day :)
I am going to try to use this peanut sauce in a few other dishes as well, it’s just that good!! We served the cabbage wraps with fresh grilled corn and felt like we were eating a meal beautiful and delicious enough to be featured on a magazine cover. Thank you so much for sharing!” – Beth
8) Spicy Kale and Coconut Stir Fry
“Hi! This recipe has been on my ‘to try’ list for weeks and I finally made it for dinner for me and my family tonight. We loved it! And I have two children who are not easy to please! Hats off to you–thank you for another fabulous recipe.” – Lisa
9) Fresh Arugula and Black Bean Tacos with Pickled Radish and Feta
“These are to-die-for. The pickled radishes were easy and are excellent as a garnish (or even by themselves). I ate leftovers from this dish twice this week– just as delish as the first time! Warmed corn tortillas are key.” – Sarah
10) Strawberry Kale Salad with Nutty Granola Croutons
“I’m going to be honest – I was skeptical about this…I typically don’t like fruit in my salad. However, something about this recipe really intrigued me. I’m sure glad it did, because this salad is delicious. I’ve made it multiple times already! It taste just like summer! Thank you!” – Elena
11) Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Crispy Baked Tofu with Honey-Sesame Glaze
“I made this for dinner last night. What an absolute winner! The slightly charred and bitter sprouts balanced perfectly with the sweet sauce (that is delicious!) and the nutty rice tied into the sesame seeds. Super tasty and amazingly put together dish. Thanks!” – Kath
12) Lemony Lentil and Chickpea Salad with Radish and Herbs
“I LOVE this salad. I’ve been making it with dill only and serving with arugula. I make a batch and take to work for lunch. Got some family hooked on it too. It’s so fresh!” – Sarah
13) Quick Vegan Chana Masala
“I just made this yesterday. It was really quick and SO good. I have tried other ‘quick chana masala’ recipes but this was by far the best. Thanks!” – Steff
14) Curried Coconut Quinoa and Greens with Roasted Cauliflower
“Well, this is a first as my husband (who is not a big fan of quinoa) raved about how good this turned out! Thanks so much for your yummy recipes – so healthy too!” – Diane
15) Spicy Vegan Black Bean Soup
“As I’m sharing the link to this recipe for the umpteenth time, I had to comment and let you know how much this soup has become a weeknight staple for me. It is so simple, yet so absolutely rich and delicious! It has saved me from take-out on more than one occasion, and I make sure to always have four cans of black beans on hand “just in case”. Thanks!” – Kathryn
16) Arugula and Cremini Quiche with Gluten-Free Almond Meal Crust
“This quiche base made with almond meal was awesome. My 21 yr old son said it was the best quiche base he had ever tasted. So easy to make and so delicious. Thanks so much.” – Jacque

“This was my first recipe from this blog & it was AMAZING. I have tried & failed at brown rice for years. It turned out perfectly here. Wouldn’t change a thing. Looking forward to enjoying this for lunch the rest of the week, and trying many more recipes!” – HM
18) Sweet Potato & Black Bean Veggie Burgers
(the burgers themselves are gluten free, so just serve them on gluten-free buns or a salad or whatnot!)
“Made these last night, AMAZING. We didn’t have millet though, so I subbed for the old quinoa in my fridge. Luckily did the trick! Thanks Kate, another stellar recipe.” – Kelly G
19) West African Peanut Soup
“I LOVED this. Seriously delicious. Adding this to the list of recipes that make me happy to be vegan. Thank you!” – Jen

I love this list Kate! I’m one of those ‘wonderful’ dinner guests who complicates things by being both gluten free and vegetarian (both for health reasons). It has certainly been an adjustment for my family and friends, and I find it hard sometimes to let people know because I don’t want to be a pain about it.
I do love this list of delicious dinners that fit both my needs perfectly – now I can just direct them here if they ask for a little inspiration :)
Also, I have more inspiration for dinners that aren’t just salad and quinoa ;)
P.S. Your girl’s nights sound awesome!
Kate
Thanks, Amy! I wish we lived on the same continent so you could come over for ladies’ night!

Dani @ DaniCaliforniaCooks
Jogged my memory that I’ve pinned a lot of these previously and had been meaning to make them! Thanks for sharing!
kristie {birch and wild}
This is awesome! Thanks for the ideas :)
Sami
This may be a silly question, but do you have a resource that you use to make sure your recipes are gluten free? I’m too scared to call anything gluten free on my site since I’m never sure if there is gluten hidden somewhere that I’m unaware of!
Matt @ Plating Pixels
Certain things are easily recognized as GF (like rice or quinoa) and you’ll remember them as you go. Always double check if you even have a remote suspision. You’d be amazed at how many things have gluten (like some soy sauces for example). For my recipes I always Google “is (insert ingredient here) gluten free?” then read a few links to confirm. Kate do you have a better tip?
Kate
Sami, that’s a great question and I’m glad you’re being so cautious with your dietary labels. I am pretty confident in my knowledge of gluten-free ingredients, but like Matt said, I research anything if I’m unsure. I also add a note at the end of every gluten-free recipes that requires a minor substitution or verification to be truly GF (like tamari soy sauce and white miso are usually, but not always, GF). I also add disclaimers to my special diet index pages that suggest that the readers always check my notes and double-check their ingredients. Even after all that, I added a nutrition disclaimer to my site (it’s at the very bottom) out of sheer paranoia. I do believe that it’s ultimately the reader’s responsibility to confirm that their recipe will suit their needs, but I do the very best I can to make this site a great resource!
Gayle
Thank you, just, thank you.
To be fair, i’ve tried most these reciepes out already, as a vegetarian coeliac you’re blog has completely turned my life around since christmas. Easy, healthy and delicious! I hugely appreciate the effort you put into this blog!
Kate
Gayle, your comment warmed my heart. Thank you! So glad you are finding good recipes here.
Matt @ Plating Pixels
It’s amazing how easy it is to make amazing gluten-free recipes. While not GF myself, I do appreciate cutting down on simple carbs. I often surprise myself when a create a recipe, to find it was gluten-free without even trying! Oh and I like the reader description call outs. People take the time to comment on our recipes and work, so it’s nice to give a little extra credit.
Kate
I’m with you, Matt! I emphasize whole grains on the blog and in my own diet because I’m hypoglycemic and really feel the effects of simple carbs (no good!). Most of the gluten-free recipes on my blog are gluten-free on accident and I love them just as much!
Deirdre
Love love the burrito bowls, specially with kale which I would never think of including!

Sarah @ SnixyKitchen
I want all of these dishes for dinner tonight (my gluttony knows no bounds), but in particular those roasted brussels with tofu – duuude. Also, I want to come to girl’s night if it involves this food!
Michelle @ Vitamin Sunshine
Yum– beautiful dishes– and some things I don’t remember seeing on your site before :) Thanks– my husband is out of the country for a while, and I have been needing motivation to cook myself healthy meals. I always end up having yogurt or scrambled eggs when he’s gone– but 3 weeks is too long to live off those things alone :)
Jane
I love the gluten free recipes. Thank you for sharing them. I really recommend gluten free food to my friends.
Katie
Thanks for this post! I saw this on Pinterest and every recipe on the “20 Gluten Free Dinner Recipes” were right up my alley! Last night, I made your Thai Green Curry with Spring Vegetables (even though it’s not spring!) and it was FAB! I am usually a little bit hesitant about using receipes from blogs because I have run into too many bad ones but this one was a hit! I actually don’t have rice vinegar in my pantry but it was still great without. I use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce and it’s a good substitution. Another great thing about this group of recipes is that you can purchase ingredients that cross over into several of the other recipes – so I went to the store and got spinach, kale, sweet potatoes, black beans, pepitas, rice, avocados & lime and I’m set to experiment with a lot of these recipes for the next week! Thanks :)
Kate
Yay! Thank you, Katie, so glad you found my blog and enjoyed your first recipe. I hope all the others turn out great for you, too! I work really hard on them. :)
Bobbi
My 15yo daughter is a vegetarian & was recently told by our doctor to try a gluten free diet in an effort to eliminate long term stomach issues. I do believe your blog will be my life saver for still feeding my family yummy food!
Lindsay
I am so thrilled I came across your blog recently. I just tried out two of your dishes yesterday. The spiral sweet potato with black bean quesadillas and the southwestern kale power salad with sweet potato, quinoa & avocado sauce-omg the sauce is A-mazing!. Both were a hit for me and my husband. We are both looking forward to trying out more recipes from the blog. I have already bought the ingredients for a few more of these gluten free dinner recipes. Loving the nutritious whole foods and variety of vegetables in each recipe leaving you anything but bored or unsatisfied. A big thank you to you Kate!
Aisha
These look absolutely fabulous! Do you have a similar list for lunches?
Kate
I do! My post on recipes that pack well for lunch is right here. A couple of them are not GF, but can be easily modified.
Joanne McDaniel
Thank you for sharing this great roundup of gluten free/vegetarian dishes. Having special dietary needs can making enjoying delicious meals difficult if you do not know how to prepare them correctly. I would like to add that some restaurants have made huge strides when it comes to offering a varied menu that accommodates many needs such as gluten-free and vegetarian. If you do a little research in your area you are sure to find some high quality places you, your family, and closest friends can enjoy without having to prepare (or clean up!) a single thing. Thanks again for sharing!
Kate
You’re welcome, Joanne! I hope some of these prove helpful.
Melanie
Please be careful with quinoa if you are truly gluten sensitive or celiac, as the proteins in quinoa are similar enough to gluten to cause damage (the lectins), and there is so much cross contamination there as they are often times processed in the same facilities as grains.
Kate
Thank you for the tip, Melanie! I haven’t heard of issues with quinoa that is clean processed.
Amanda Swartz
I want to eat all of these things!
Kate
Thanks!
Marilyn
Please note that aspects of your dishes, such as soysauce, are NOT Gluten Free. For Celiac’s who get sick from gluten, this is a BIG problem. Otherwise I love your book – it was my favorite gift to give this Christmas!
Kate
Hi Marilyn, Thank you for your comment. I know soy sauce is not gluten free. However I do try to note that if soy sauce is need to use tamari instead. I hope this helps. Thanks for purchasing my book!
Mr Dami3n
To be fair you can get gluten fee soy sauce so it’s not much of a problem. I was diagnosed with celiacs 4 years ago. You just gotta look around, heck you could just write “gluten free soy sauce”. :)
Maxine Nelson
Please inspire me With a nut free Spice Egg free veggie gluten free Non cardboard menu idea. Not keen on oats or quinoa Either….hmmm love your inspiration…thank you xx
jackie

I have to think about it sometimes as we are in Australia and call things by different names
